Our lives are so full of "little black boxes" that hide from us a level of complexity that few of us truly grasp. This is a HeNe (Helium-Neon) Laser refracted across some PC-104 hardware, with a touch of dry ice to highlight the beam. The speckled nature of the red areas is inherent to laser light.

This is my favorite. The more I look at it the more I like it. I love the colors and the HeNe makes me homesick (my dad's a chemical laser physicist). Neat neat. I can't believe you only got 5th.

Thanks Rachel! Chemical Laser Physicist, eh? Cool :-) I assume that involves mostly designing compounds for dye-pumped lasers and the like, or do they do a lot of solid-state stuff? That sounds like one lab very much worth visiting! Very glad they call themselves physicists too, and not chemists. After all, physics is The One True Science :-)
